FRIENDS AFRICA CONCLUDES A SUCCESSFUL HIGH LEVEL PRIVATE SECTOR ENGAGEMENT MEETING

Friends of the Global Fund Africa in partnership with the Nigerian Ministry of Health, Nigerian Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM), Nigerian Business Coalition against HIV/AIDS (NIBUCAA), The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) hosted a successful private sector event funded by the United Nations Foundation (UNF) tagged “Increasing Returns on Investments in the fight against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria”
The aim of this meeting was to promote the various roles that the Nigerian private
sector can play in the Global Fund with the objective of fostering
public-private partnerships for the successful implementation of
programs in Nigeria to fight the three diseases.
The
event was well attended by Corporate Social Responsibility Managers,
Public Relations Managers and Heads of Corporate Communications from
about 44 Nigerian companies cutting across the various sectors,
telecommunications, oil and gas, manufacturing and consumer goods. Some
of such companies include Stanbic IBTC bank (subsidiary of Standard
bank), Shell, Ecobank, MTN Nigeria, Exxon Mobil, Julius Berger, and
Chevron Nigeria plc.
Delegates
were received and addressed by the Nigerian Minister of Health,
Professor C.O. Onyebuchi Chukwu; CEO/Founder of Friends Africa, Dr.
Akudo Anyanwu Ikemba; Global Fund Representative Mr. David Hayward
Evans, Director General of NACA, Professor John Idoko;
Nigerian CCM Chair, Dr. John Jinung and Mr. Olusina Olulana, Executive
secretary and CEO Nigerian Business Coalition against HIV/AIDS.
The Honourable Minister of Health, Prof. C.O. Onyebuchi Chukwu in his speech called on all stakeholders to jointly claim ownership in the campaign against the three killer diseases and urged the companies to move beyond rendering social responsibility to private responsibility. This meeting will be followed by a CEO dinner next month.
